Vipers Newsletter #1

Hi Vipers
For those of you new to Varsity Rugby, welcome to the weekly newsletter on what’s  going on in Vipers Rugby.  Lots going on, so let’s get along and get involved!!

Pre-Season Training
Full pre-season training for all grades is under way, Tues & Thurs 6pm at the club rooms on Ilam Fields.  We expect all l Christchurch based players to be there, and out of town players to be there as soon as they arrive back in town.  We will to work need on skills, fitness and organisation if we are going to make 2011 a special year for the Vipers in a special year for NZ rugby.

If you have mates wanting to join the fun and play for the Vipers, please bring them along.  The more the better!!

7's Action
A great effort at the unofficial Canterbury Club 7’s champs last week at Woodend.  For the third time in 5 tournaments over the summer we made the final only to finish runner-up!!.  However, still a great effort for the Gold team to get there, and also from the Maroon team for making it into the Plate section, and going down in the quarter-finals in extra time.  Top try scores for the Golds were Junior Salevao with 7 and Willie McGoon with 6.

The next tournament is the Tight fives 7's tournament at Rakaia on 12th Feb, which should be a lot of fun for the big boys, and of course the Vipers tournament for men's & women's, tight fives, & U20  teams on Sun 27th Feb as part of the USCA sports festival.  Also need lots of helpers for the day, so anyone not playing, please volunteer to help make the day a great success.

Working Bee
Need a good crew for helpers for a working bee to clean up in and around the club rooms in the morning of Saturday 19th Feb.  Remember this is your club, so the more you do to help the better it will be!!.  Please see Les Black if you can help – Free drinks for all those who volunteer.  Remember many hands will make light work and see the season off to a great start.

Welcome Back Touch Tourney and BBQ
All existing and new players are invited to a welcome back mix & mingle touch Tourney and BBQ at the clubrooms on Sunday 20th Feb at 2pm.  The day will kick off with a pick up Touch tourney for all players from all grades, followed by a beer and BBQ for $5. For returning and new students a great way to catch up with what’s going on in the club before lectures kick off the next day.

UCSA Clubs Day
Need student helpers to man the rugby desk at clubs day on Tues 22th and Wed 23rd Feb. If it can spare an hour or so on either day, please see me, especially those who can’t assist with the working bee!!.

Crusader Action
Great to see some of the Vipers featuring in the Crusaders pre-season games.  Brendon O’Connor, Luke Whitelock  and Patrick Osborne all started against the Reds, while Brendon also started against Rebels with Luke off the bench.  Of course in the next week we expect to also see Vipers Kieran Read and Andy Ellis back in action for the Crusaders.

New Training Lights !!!!
For all of you who have cursed at the poor quality of the training lights, your prayers have been answered, with a much needed upgrade planned to take place before the end of day light saving at the start of April!!!.  As a result fields 2 & 3 should be fully led, which is tremendous news for our ability to run quality trainings and takes away all the excuses about poor execution !!

Trip to  Dunedin to play OU
We have been able to re-initiate a 100 year tradition with the re-instatement of the 1st XV games with Otago University in Dunedin on Sat 19th March as part of the per-season programme.  As a bonus the weekend will feature a three way tourney with OU and Akl Uni, and will double as a trial for the selection of the NZU touring team (see below).  In a 2nd bonus, we have also been able to arrange matches with OU for Div 2, Women’s and prem colts on the same day, so will be a huge weekend with 80-100 players travelling down on Friday evening and back on Sunday.  A 3rd bonus is that the Crusaders play the Highlanders at Carisbrook on the Saturday night, so we will be looking to secure a group discount on tickets.  So, please keep this weekend free!

NZU Tours and International Universities Tournament
The NZU senior representative team undertakes a 3 week tour to Japan and Australia in April and May, which includes a “test” against Aussie Universities on the way home. A number of our players have been  nominated for this touring side, and we would expect a good representation.

The NZU colts are scheduled to tour USA  in December, which should be an aim for a number of younger players to get selected for.  By all accounts  from the players who went in 2009 this is great tour to go on.

We have also been invited to an International University 10’s tournament in Hong Kong in September.  A decision on this invite will be made in the near future depending on player interest and availability.
